Week 8: Creating a study sample

图片
This week, I will continue my research on Harvey Weinstein's memes. I collected 20 related memes as research samples. The memes I choose will meet the requirements of Cohesion, Consistency, Clarity, and I will clearly explain what features and meanings of the memes I choose.  Here I am going to list three criteria I will be using throughout this project.  The meme I chose was about Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault. This is the biggest scandal in Hollywood, and the feminist movement was triggered through this incident (The #metoo movement) My memes contains the photos or names of Harvey Weinstein. Part of it is directly represented by the image of Harvey Weinstein, and the other part is the use of the person associated with this event or the related cartoon image, including Harvey Weinstein in the text section. The second criterion I chose was the explicit or implicit involvement of gender in the text of memes. I hope to study how feminists express feminism through words...

Week 7: Refining Meme Research

图片
After a discussion with Dr. Campbell last week, I re-searched for someone or an event, hoping that the study could be more specific. Finally, I decided to study    Harvey Weinstein. In October 2017, The New York Times and The New Yorker reported that dozens of women accused American film producer Harvey Weinstein of rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse over a period of at least 30 years. More than 80 women in the film industry have since accused Weinstein of such acts. Weinstein denied "any non-consensual sex". Shortly after the reports, Weinstein was dismissed from The Weinstein Company, expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and other professional associations, and disappeared from public view. My research explores the theme of gender related to how memes construct networks of feminist critique and response, mobilizing the derisive laughter that energizes current feminisms. This will be done by exploring how Harvey Weinstein and related peo...

Week 6: Meme Project Proposal

图片
Memes are typically used to convey a statement or question in a humorous manner. During these weeks of exploration, especially the analysis of political events last week, I found interesting phenomena. People will express their opinions in a unique way in the memes. In particular, sexual assaults have occurred frequently in various fields in recent years, and the voice of gender equality has become more and more important in society, such as #Metoo Movement. Feminists use the meme to express their views on gender equality rights on the Internet.  I will select memes from various fields, such as sexual assault cases of politicians, gender discrimination, and some female public figures. Here are two examples I picked. This meme was created based off of the comments of Republican politician Todd Akin when asked his opinion on abortion rights in the case of rape. Todd akin said, “It seems to be, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, it’s really rare. If it...
