Week 8: Creating a study sample
This week, I will continue my research on Harvey Weinstein's memes. I collected 20 related memes as research samples. The memes I choose will meet the requirements of Cohesion, Consistency, Clarity, and I will clearly explain what features and meanings of the memes I choose. Here I am going to list three criteria I will be using throughout this project.
The meme I chose was about Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault. This is the biggest scandal in Hollywood, and the feminist movement was triggered through this incident (The #metoo movement) My memes contains the photos or names of Harvey Weinstein. Part of it is directly represented by the image of Harvey Weinstein, and the other part is the use of the person associated with this event or the related cartoon image, including Harvey Weinstein in the text section.
The second criterion I chose was the explicit or implicit involvement of gender in the text of memes. I hope to study how feminists express feminism through words. Feminism may express dissatisfaction with Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault facts through positive criticism of Harvey Weinstein. At the same time, they may also express their irony of the unequal status of men and women through concealed methods. Finally, I will also pick some of the memes that Harvey Weinstein has associated with other celebrities and analyze the meaning of the expression.
The sample I chose was the memes that were made for this incident after Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual assault. Memes were released on October 2017 - today. At the same time, I chose a wide range of websites, not limited to memes websites such as knowyourmemes.com. Because I want to comprehensively analyze the content through a more extensive sample.
Examples
This meme meets my criteria. It contains the cartoon image of Harvey Weinstein and the content of Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault. In a news report, the infringed female star said that Harvey Weinstein had sexually assaulted her on the sofa in the office. So in this meme, Harvey Weinstein was cartoonized as a sofa in his office, with the words "money, fame, rape." And Harvey Weinstein, who turned into a sofa, is catching up with female stars. This meme expresses her dissatisfaction with Harvey Weinstein's behavior through a critical approach. Money and rights put men in a higher position, and at the same time they can use this status of inequality to violate women. This shows the ugly face of Harvey Weinstein.
This memes also fits my three criteria. The image content is the character of Harvey Weinstein. The text part implicitly expresses his critique through irony. The text says Harvey Weinstein is a good person, and his sexual assault on women just doesn't know how to express himself.
This meme also meets my criteria. First, it included Harvey Weinstein on the image, Harvey Weinstein and Bill Clinton standing together. In the text section is "that which we call sin in others is experiment for us." At first glance, this meme does not express content about gender, but Harvey Weinstein and Bill Clinton are also prosecuted for sexual assault, they called the violation of a woman’s wrongdoing as an "experience." Feminists criticized their behavior through irony. This content expands the facts by finding celebrities who have the same behavior as Harvey Weinstein.
Good strategy, but explain a bit more what you mean by "explicit or implicit involvement of gender in the text of memes".
