Week 9: Letting your research question guide you

This week I will continue to study the memes of Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault. I will expand and modify my problem, I hope it can be more clear.

First, I have reflected on my research question. My question is: "How feminists use memes to shape feminism on the internet, especially in controversial events, such as the sexual assault of famous Hollywood Harvey Weinstein?" But I think before I study feminism, I should first make a preliminary analysis of the meaning expressed by memes. I should understand what these memes express about gender, and then go on to further analyze how it expresses feminism.
So, my question is “What messages and assumptions do Internet Memes communicate about gender? And how feminists use memes to shape feminism on the internet, especially in controversial events, such as the sexual assault of famous Hollywood Harvey Weinstein?"

Second, define and contextualize. I need to define the spread of memes on the web and its impact before I study the memes about Harvey Weinstein. Then I need to understand the spread of feminism on the web. In addtion, I need to look for some similar cases that have happened before to explore the status of memes in feminism. In my research on Harvey Weinstein's memes, I need to research what attitude these memes expressed about gender?  what methods are used, and how do these expressions affect feminism? And this event caused a massive feminist movement (the#Metoo Movement), which is also worth studying.

My memes will be selected according to my sampling strategy.  They contain the characters of Harvey Weinstein or the characters related to sexual assault. In the text, Harvey Weinstein's name or Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault is expressed. Finally, these memes need to include attitudes toward gender in memes. They may express dissatisfaction with this event through obvious direct critique, or sarcasm through metaphor.

Hurricane Harvey of 2017 is tied with 2005's Hurricane Katrina as the costliest tropical cyclone on record, inflicting $125 billion in damage. Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault is a public contempt for the unequal status of men and women. This incident not only hurts the women he infringes, but also challenges the status of women in the United States. The author of this meme compared Harvey Weinstein's behavior to a hurricane, proving its destructiveness. It satirized the behavior of Harvey Weinstein through a metaphorical approach.

First of all, Harvey Weinstein's office was described as a place that is very prone to sexual assault, saying that Harvey Weinstein's behavior is accused and ironic. In addition, this meme reveals the fragility of women's status. Women are very vulnerable to sexual assault, whether in society or at school.

This meme has a very terrible monster image, holding a beautiful girl in her hand, the girl's expression is very painful. This monster is Jabba Desilijic Tiure, commonly known as Jabba the Hutt, is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. He is a large, slug-like alien known as a Hutt who, like many others of His species, The author compares Harvey Weinstein to a very ugly monster, comparing his behavior to a monster-infested girl. And in the text section, Harvey Weinstein used his job position to put pressure on women. This meme is criticized by the image of Harvey Weinstein, and reflects the status inequality under the factors such as position.

  1. In relation to your research question, please explain more concretely what you mean by "how feminists use memes to shape feminism on the internet"? Do you have evidence that feminist are using these memes or creating these memes specifically? If not re frame your question. Also the follow up question:"What messages and assumptions do Internet Memes communicate about gender?" is too general, can you make it more concrete?
